Two Americans in Italy – the Colosseum in Rome [PICTURES]
Two Americans in Italy
A trip to Italy would not be complete without a visit to the Roman Colosseum. My wife and I spent our last few days in Italy, in Rome. Seeing the Colosseum was definitely a highlight. It is the largest amphitheater ever built.
According to Wikipedia: The Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. In 1749, Pope Benedict XIV endorsed the belief that the Colosseum was a sacred site where early Christians had been martyred. It is a major reason that it wasn't torn down and used for other purposes.
Thanks to my lovely wife, Jenny, for taking these wonderful pictures.
