New Ingredient Laws Impact Thousands of Colorado Products
Many products purchased and sold in Colorado will have to undergo drastic changes in order to stay on shelves. The Food and Drug Administration has banned a controversial ingredient commonly used as a food dye.
This product is found in a wide variety of products including soft drinks, candy, cereals, ice cream, and a whole lot more.
Ingredient Now Banned in Colorado
Red No.3 is a product that has been around for a long time. It serves as a food coloring. The dye makes foods appear as bright cherry-red.

The product has been linked to cancer and food companies now have until 2027 to change their ingredients and recipes in order to follow new guidelines by the Food and Drug Administration.
Red No.3 three officially became a part of American lives in 1907. According to NBC, the ingredient is made from petroleum.
Food and Drug Administration Speaks Out
You likely have heard of this ingredient and additive before. If it rings a bell, you most likely know that lawmakers and the Food and Drug Administration have been attempting to ban this ingredient and additive for a very long time.
Here is what the Food and Drug Administration said about the ban.
this ingredient causes cancer in male laboratory rats exposed to high levels of FD&C Red No. 3 because of a hormonal mechanism that occurs in male rats. Studies in other animals or in humans did not show the same effect and there is no evidence showing FD&C Red No. 3 causes cancer in humans.
The Food and Drug Administration is now looking at other color additives to ensure the safety of all Colorado residents.
Take a look at which products will be changing below.
