School Lunches In The ’90s Were Next Level

It happened every Tuesday, and it gave my life meaning. On Tuesday at my elementary school in Wellington, we were offered the magical chicken patty sandwich. You could also pick the corndog, but the CP sandwich was most people's choice.

Do schools still have chicken patty sandwiches? Can I make them as an adult? Is it time to get a colonoscopy? Maybe all of these things are true.

Let's walk down memory lane and take a peek at some seriously delicious lunch options from way back in the late nineteen hundreds.

Chicken Patty Sandwich

It didn't need fancy sauces. It didn't need fresh meat. And you didn't always get a fresh bun. But we still ate these sammys because we loved America, and nothing says America like a cafeteria chicken patty sandwich.

Square Pizza

I wish I knew when the last time was the last time. I wish I knew that I was eating my last piece of square pizza. The crust was like cardboard, and the cheese didn't melt, and it probably gave me adult-onset Crohn's disease, but if I could go back just one more time, I would.

You never know what you have until it's gone.

Fish Sticks

Hand to God, I haven't had a fishstick in almost three decades, and I wonder why? As an adult, I can drive to the store, buy a box of fish sticks that are 2% actual fish, and cook them myself.

Why don't I? Because no one can prepare a perfectly crisp-on-the-outside, still-frozen-on-the-inside fish sticks quite like the lunchlady can. I can compete.

PB&J Sandwich

Serious question: Have some kids always been allergic to peanut butter? Were they allergic, but no one cared, and it was about surviving. If that's true, I'm going to feel really bad.
