Most people seem to own a pet of some sort. It can be a fish, a worm, a cat, a dog, a bird, or any other number of animals. No matter what kind of pet you have, it takes a certain type of investment. Your pet needs food, toys, a shelter, and likely needs to go to the vet every so often, depending on what it is. Owning pets can get pricy, especially when it comes to owning man's best friend. Dogs are one of the most common pets that people own, and for good reason. They are loyal, cuddly, sweet, and fun to play with. When it comes to owning a dog in Colorado, it can take a toll on your wallet, and the average cost of a dog in the Centennial State may surprise you.

Owning a dog can be expensive, especially when they get sick and have to go to the vet, or, depending on what breed you have, it may cost a lot to buy in the beginning. Certain states cost more than others, and according to a recent list by playcasino.com, the most expensive state to own a dog in is Northern California, where it costs an average of $7,360 to own man's best friend. The second most expensive state is New York, where the average dog costs $7,260, and Washington is the third most expensive state at an average of $7,100 a year. These are average costs, meaning some dogs will cost less and others will cost much more. When it comes to Colorado, how much do dog owners spend on average, and where does the state rank?

Colorado is the seventh most expensive state to own a dog in the country, with a yearly average cost of $5,778. Two visits to the vet for vaccines will run you $480 a year, six sessions of grooming will cost you $450 a year, and the average cost for dog food throughout the year is $480. Obviously, depending on how many dogs you have and the type of food you buy, this price can fluctuate. The highest cost in Colorado, though, is that the average dog owner will spend $4,368 on having someone walk their dog when they are at work, out of town, or if they are unable to. If you let your dog roam and run in a big yard or walk them yourself, you can save a significant amount of money in Colorado. The dog walking business has been rising over the last five years in Colorado, playing a role in the high price of owning a dog.
