It's back to school time.  It's the one time of the year I didn't mind shopping with my Mom when I was a kid.  I would always get a new pair of shoes, a couple pairs of jeans, and of course, school supplies.  I have listed my five favorite schools supplies from when I was young.  I also give you a chance to tell us yours by answering our poll.

5.  Big Pencil

I don't know why, but I always loved the big pencils we used to use in the younger grades. Maybe it's because I have always had big hands, even as a kid. Maybe I just like the way they wrote on my Big Chief Tablet. Big fat pencils are #5 on my list.

4. The Compass

This compass doesn't look so daunting, but the ones we had when I was growing up were like weapons.  They were a pencil on one side and a very dangerous miniature spear on the other side. I honestly don't ever remember using one for their intended use, but I know I used them to poke holes or carve my initials into whatever I wanted to be permanent.

3. Trapper Keeper Notebooks

One of the most exciting things to get for school every year was a new notebook.  For a few years we had what was called a "Trapper Keeper".  It was a fancy notebook or binder that held your paper for writing and other loose papers as well.  The Trapper Keepers were always decorated with the latest pop culture icons, like Star Wars or Indiana Jones or Dukes of Hazzard.

2. Elmer's Glue

Elmer's glue was always on our school supply list.  I know we used it when we were younger, but I don't ever remember using glue for anything after middle school other that putting on my hand and peeling it off or gluing someone's pencil to their desk.  That wasn't me, of course, but I saw other people do it.

1.  Crayola Crayons

A new box of crayons was always a highlight each school year.  The ultimate was the 64-count box of crayons with a sharpener. I know I owned a couple of those in my life, but I also know my parents couldn't afford the big box every year. I think the big box of crayons was the biggest status symbol among all school supplies.
