There are many fears that Coloradans might have in this state—mountain lions, bears, wolves, and even having their vehicle stolen. A recent study shows Colorado ranks at the top for the highest number of vehicles stolen per 100,000 people.

Colorado Ranks First for Vehicle Theft

Colorado ranked first among 50 states with 777 vehicles stolen per 100,000 people, while Washington came in second with 627 vehicles stolen per 100,000 people, according to Compare the Market.

Regarding vehicle thefts in Colorado, some makes and models are more popular among thieves than others. These are the three most stolen vehicles in Colorado:

  • Kia Sportage - ranks third-
  • Chevrolet Pickup Trucks - ranks second-
  • Ford Pickup Trucks - ranks as the most stolen

How These Models of Vehicles Compare to Previous Years

Only one make and model appears on the top theft list for 2025 that was also on the list in 2024: the Chevrolet Pickup Truck. In 2024, Hyundai Elantras and Sonatas ranked in the top three.

Despite Colorado being the state with the most stolen vehicles per 100,00 people, data from the Colorado State Patrol and the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority indicate that auto theft continues to be a significant concern; however, thefts have decreased for the third consecutive year.
