Man High on Meth Leads Weld County Deputies on Pursuit

A man high on methamphetamine led Weld County deputies on a pursuit on Sunday morning.

According to a press release from the Weld County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the Kum-N-Go in Mead at around 7 a.m. on a report of a man causing a disturbance. After one deputy made contact with the man at the gas pumps, asking for identification, the man backed up his Ford F-250 onto the lawn, jumping the curb and fleeing northbound across the center median on Highway 66, through a parking lot, and then north on Weld County Road 9 1/2 - blowing through 2 stop signs in the process.

The man, later identified as Steven Michael Kielian, 27, continued traveling northbound into the Rio Vista Dairy, driving into a field, through several barb wire fences, and jumped his vehicle across a concrete ditch.

Kielian then drove north to another residence, left his vehicle, and attempted to steal a Volkswagen. When his attempt was unsuccessful, he returned to his Ford F-250, where he then unsuccessfully tried to ram it into the deputies' vehicle. After that, he headed south on WCR 9 1/2, turning eastbound onto WCR 32. Soon, the vehicle stopped at a fence on the north side of the road.

But the pursuit didn't stop there.

An unidentified citizen returning home in the area spotted Kielian running through his property. The man jumped out of his own vehicle to confront Kielian, slowing him down until deputies could make contact with him.

Deputies tased Kielian when he fled to the northeast; even so, he attempted to flee again but was physically subdued by another deputy.

Upon being taken into custody, Kielian told deputies he was on meth. He was checked by medical personnel before being taken to the Weld County Jail.

Kielian was charged with vehicular eluding, driving under the influence, first degree criminal trespass, resisting arrest, attempted vehicular assault, possession of controlled substance II, introduction of contraband into a facility, and possession of drug paraphernalia. It's estimated he caused $2,000 worth of damage during the property incident.

All charges are merely accusations until proven guilty in a court of law.
