Deputies were dispatched to U.S. 287 and Berthoud Parkway at 7:15 a.m. on Thursday, June 3 due to reports of a traffic collision. The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office’s Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling team also responded, as per David Moore, spokesman for the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office.

An investigation into the crash determined that a 66-year-old Fort Collins man was driving a 1985 GMC van southbound on U.S. 287, when he ran a red light at Berthoud Parkway and hit a 2014 Nissan Frontier, which then hit a pickup.

The driver and sole occupant of the Nissan was evaluated on scene and not transported to a hospital and no injuries were reported by the occupants of the pickup, which only sustained minor damage.

Martinez was not wearing a seat belt and did not survive the crash; Moore said Martinez had partially ejected from the car as a result of the crash.

According to a report from the Larimer County Coroner's office, 66-year-old Tommy Martinez died by multiple blunt force injuries to his head and neck that were sustained in the crash. The manner of death was ruled as an accident.
