After seeing one of our favorite restaurants to grab a quick taco or Tex-Mex meal from close suddenly without notice, we’ve now learned that multiple locations around Colorado have done the same recently.

As we roll through 2024, we find ourselves saying goodbye to more and more of our favorite places to shop, eat, and play. From smaller local favorites to bigger national chains, when you love something, it’s a bummer to see it go.

Earlier this week, we told you about one of our favorite taco restaurants just down the street from the radio station closing down seemingly overnight. Not only did they close, but the restaurant was completely boarded up!

After releasing the original story, it came to our attention that it wasn’t just our local location, that this exact same thing happened to multiple locations across Colorado in the last week. There one day, closed and boarded up the next! What’s going on

The Taco John’s in Windsor was open last week but was closed and boarded up over the weekend. After talking about what happened to the TJ’s in Windsor, we discovered that at least five other local Colorado locations suffered the same fate in the last week or so. It’s a bummer because we LOVE Taco John’s!

Joining Windsor’s Taco John’s being closed and boarding up, are other Colorado locations in Clifton, Grand Junction, Sterling, Fort Morgan, and the location in Denver off of I-25 and 58th Avenue, which doubled as a Steak Escape. All there one day, and closed, signs removed, and boarded up the next. The one on I-25 and 58th is already covered in graffiti, as seen below, which is super classy, Denver...

As most of us who’ve seen these unorthodox rapid closures, we wanted to know what exactly was going on. Businesses close all the time, but it’s extremely rare for the locations to be boarded up like these TJ locations have been.

We’ve tried to get answers from other Taco John’s that are still open, but they haven't had any answers as to why the other locations around the state suddenly closed, so the sudden closures remain a mystery.

Why Are Some Taco John's Around Colorado Closing And Boarding Up?

A couple of our listeners who seem to have inside knowledge have chimed in and said the signage is inside the buildings, while Taco John's, who still owns the buildings, is figuring out what's next with them. Boarding them up was to keep the buildings from being broken into while they shop the properties around, but we're still unsure of that explanation...

If you have any additional information on not just why they closed, but why they’re being boarded up, we’d love to hear from you at BigRob@TownsquareMedia.com so we can update this story and let other TJ fans know what's going on.

Our hope is that this isn’t a trend that continues because we love Taco Johns, and would hate to lose any more of our local locations around the area. Nobody can touch their tasty Potato Ole's, so we better get this figured out.

All the Businesses Colorado Sadly Lost In This Last Year

While the list is much longer, here are some of the Colorado businesses that we were most sad to see go in 2023.

This Local Colorado Mexican Restaurant Is One Of The Best

After opening in 2008, Las Palmeras Mexican Restaurant has become one of the area's very best locally-owned places to get delicious, and authentic Mexican food. We found this place by accident years ago while driving hungry down Main Street in Longmont and have been regulars ever since. The owner, the staff, the food, and the drinks are all top notch and that's what makes this one of Colorado's top choices for delicious Mexican food.
