Officials are warning that the highly invasive species known as the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) has been spotted in Larimer County.

According to the Colorado State Forrest Service, the destructive tree pest was located in the town of Berthoud and is the third confirmed sighting in Colorado in less than two months. It is estimated that as much as 15% of local trees are susceptible to the issue and once infected, trees can die within two to four years.

It is not known at this time whether the pest is spreading naturally or via accidental human transport. This is a big reason why you should always buy firewood local to where you're camping. Wood transported from other areas has the potential to be contaminated and spread the issue.

The most recent EAB was found on private property and foresters are in the area checking to see if has spread and to determine the extent of the infestation. The first Colorado contamination was reported back in 2013 in the City of Boulder. Click HERE for more information.
