Just like so many people, my dogs are part of my family. My furry family members are everything to me and while Savannah and I rescued Koda and Gypsy, we truly are the lucky ones. But there is one story that has stuck with me since last year and it had to do with a couple who had their dog stolen from them at gunpoint in Colorado. Obviously, a very traumatic experience but there are a few things you can do to keep your pets safe.

No one is ever expecting to have their dog stolen from them, especially after you've worked a long day, and you're just taking your dog for a walk. But unfortunately, you need to stay aware of your surroundings and never let your guard down because you never know when the unexpected could happen.

Remember every dog has a value, whether it's for resale, breeding, ransom, or fighting.

Things You Can do to Protect Your Dog From Being Stolen

  1. Never leave your dog alone, even for a few seconds. That's all it takes for someone to sneak in and take your dog without notice.
  2. Pay attention to your surroundings, it's common for a dog thief to follow their victim prior to attempting to steal the animal.
  3. Walk your dog in pairs, while another person doesn't guarantee your safety, it is always better to have someone with you just in case.
  4. Be careful of what you post online. Your posting about your animals might seem harmless but that could give a thief the information to attract your dog and get away quickly.
  5. Always microchip your dog, the best way to ensure your dog makes it back home safely is if they are microchipped.
