My wife and I had a wonderful time during the holidays visiting family in North Carolina and Gerorgia. We took one day to become tourists in the town of Madison, Georgia, which has great historical significance because most of its buildings were spared during the Civil War.

According to the Town of Madison:

"A large portion of Madison's existing residential historic architecture was completed between 1830 and 1860. A detachment of General Sherman's Union Army, under the command of General Slocum, came through Downton Madison during their march from Atlanta to Savannah in November, 1864. Senator Joshua Hill is said to have led a delegation of men that rode out to meet with General Slocum and reminded him of the gentleman's agreement not to burn the houses in Madison. This was documented in Sherman's memoirs."

I took pictures of many of the homes and churches, and government buildings that were saved during that March.
