I'm at that really annoying age (40...okay 43) where I say stuff like "I remember when that Walmart was a field. My kids are never impressed with my elephant memory. So I thought I would take a walk down memory lane and go over just some of the restaurants from the 90's that closed down.

Here's the list of joints that not only closed down but also broke my heart

  • Pizza Pipeline was located near CSU. You could get a slice of pizza for only one dollar. No tax. If you had one single dollar bill, you could just hand it to them, and they would give you the pizza. To a poor high school kid, this place was perfect.
  • The Pickle Barrel, also in the heart of Fort Collins near the CSU campus, was so good. The sandwiches were out of this world, and this one time, Kevin Bacon came in and bought one of those very sandwiches. I wasn't there, but word traveled like wildfire.
  • Furrs Cafeteria was located in a strip mall, and my grandma was their number one fan. I can still remember the food trays, fresh out of the steam cleaner. Furrs Cafeteria walked so Golden Corral could run.
  • Bennigan's is a tough one for me. You see, I worked there in my college years as a waitress, and I loved it so much. I worked in the smoking section and made bank because the customers were relaxing in flavor country when I brought the bill.

Those are just a few of my favorite restaurants in Fort Collins that I think about and smile. And damn, could I go for a Monte Cristo sandwich right about now?
