When people think about Colorado, they think of the beautiful mountains, rivers, lakes, and skylines. People probably do not think about Colorado's one active volcano. I will be honest with you.

I had no idea there was an active volcano in Colorado until today. Apparently, I did not pay very close attention in school.

My first thought was whether or not it could erupt in the near future. Here is what we have learned about Dotsero.

Dotsero Is Colorado's Only Active Volcano

According to Uncover Colorado, there is only one active volcano in the state of Colorado. They say that you can find remnants of the last time the volcano erupted over 4,000 years ago.

Dotsero is in Eagle County and about a two-hour drive from Denver alongside Interstate 70.

Should We Be Concerned About the Volcano?

Dotsero is known as a moderate threat due to its history and potential impact if the volcano erupts. The Colorado Sun talked to an expert at Colorado School of Mines. The geologist said that if Dotsero erupted that Interstate 70 would be closed for an entire year.

That sounds like a very significant eruption.

However, the likelihood of eruption is low. You never know what can happen, though.

Visit Dotsero in Colorado

The Dotsero volcano looks like a very fun place to visit. I have never been, but I am adding it to my list of things to see this summer.

There is also a hiking trail alongside the volcano that has been assigned as "easy difficulty".
