Did You Know This Fun Fact About Denver International Airport?
Like many Coloradans, I have flown into and out of Denver International Airport dozens of times in my life. There is something about Denver's airport that has always fascinated me. From the demon horse when driving up to the airport or the main terminal reminding me of a gigantic circus tent, our airport is full of design elements that will make you do a double take.
Travelers arrive at the Denver International Airport prepared to leave the state of Colorado and pass through the security checkpoints, they head to the trains to get to one of the three terminals. I have a love-hate relationship with that train. For some reason, I feel like I am fully prepared for when it will start to accelerate and brace myself. Yet, it never fails, I lose my balance almost always. Thankfully, I have never fallen. However, I am sure the time will come at one point in the future.
Artwork in the Train Tunnel at Denver International Airport
While you have probably noticed that there are propellers in the tunnel of the train, there are a couple of things you might not know about them. If you had to guess how many propellers are in the train tunnel, how many do you think there are? Off the top of my head, I would say hundreds of them.
If you guessed the same, we are both wrong. There are thousands of propellers in the train tunnel at Denver International Airport—5,280 propellers to be exact. This artwork, titled Kinetic Light Curtain, created by Antonette Rosato and William Maxwell is on a grid system that changes configuration every time the train passes.
The 5,280 propellers are 12 inches in diameter and span the entire mile of the train tunnel. Blue fluorescent lights illuminate the spinning propellers to give the propellers more depth and glow. These propellers also spin from the winds generated by the passing train.
