Denver Zoo King Cobra Treated for Cancer

Last year a King Cobra was diagnosed with cancer and has been treated with chemotherapy.

The King Cobra is 18 years old and diagnosed with lymphosarcoma back in February. The diagnosis on the snake was confirmed by nine x-rays, blood samples and a biopsy. The Denver Zoo created created a new chemotherapy regimen specifically for the snake that included adapting a cancer treatment that is used to treat cancer in cats.

So, how did zookeepers manage to administer chemotherapy to a large snake? Simple... The chemotherapy pills were placed inside dead rodents and fed to the snake every three weeks.

Denver Zoo has checked the snake's blood three times and has been stable since August and it appears that the cancer has not returned!
