CSU & Fort Collins Teaming Up For MLK Day Celebration
The Colorado State University and Fort Collins communities will celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with several events on Monday, January 21st. The theme of this year's celebration is “Faces of Freedom: Past, Present, Future.”
THE MARCH
The route of the traditional one-mile community march, which begins at 1 p.m. this year to accommodate the Presidential Inauguration, will start in Old Town Square and continue south down College Avenue, then east on Laurel Street. The march will proceed through the center of the Oval on Colorado State's campus, then continue west on Isotope Drive to end at CSU's Lory Student Center. Participants will be encouraged to sing as they march.
Traffic will be restricted during the march. Those restrictions will include delays along portions of College Avenue and Mountain, Oak, Olive, Magnolia, Mulberry, Myrtle, Laurel, Mason and Howes streets. Parking in city garages - located at Remington and Mountain and at Mason and Laporte - will be free on Jan. 21. Two-hour parking restrictions in Old Town will not apply.
POETRY & ESSAY CONTEST
Immediately following the march, a celebration will commence at 1:45 p.m. in the Lory Student Center Main Ballroom. During the celebration, this year's poetry and essay winners from Poudre School District will read their winning works.
VOLUNTEER FAIR
Following the celebration, the Volunteer Fair will be held in the Lory Student Center Food Court. Several local agencies will be on hand to offer opportunities to get involved in the community and bring King’s dream to reality.
