Could This Town be the First Dark Sky Site on the Front Range?
Looking at the night sky is always fascinating. You never know what you are going to witness. From shooting stars to the International Space Station floating by, there is always something intriguing to look at.
When looking at the skies in Colorado, the darker the place area is, the better chances you have to see more stars. One Northern Colorado town is looking to become the first dark sky community on the Front Range of Colorado.
The town of Berthoud has announced they are seeking Dark Sky Community certification. To get the certification, the Town of Berthoud has created a sky brightness monitoring program that utilizes solar energy for sky quality meters.
These sky-quality meters have been placed throughout the town of Berthoud to monitor readings in numerous areas. The Town of Berthoud will then use the data from the sky-quality monitors to identify the areas that need improvement and how the dark sky code updates affect the town of Berthoud.
The Town of Berthoud said that the Northern Colorado community is currently at a level five on the dark sky scale that can be seen below.
