One of the great joys of being an adult is having a dog. My wife and I have had the honor of caring for four wonderful German Shepherds throughout our relationship. Sadly, we lost one of them earlier this year to an aggressive cancer.

Being a household that has always had a dog, we felt it was the right thing to do for our state of mind to welcome a new dog into the family and two weeks ago, we brought home a puppy.

In case you didn't know, having a young puppy can be fulfilling, stressful, and pretty expensive. The initial costs of getting a dog can add up quickly with supplies, food, vet visits, and more.

The True Cost of Owning a Dog in 2025 in Colorado

Rover.com recently released a report showing how much it can cost annually to take care of that canine family member, and if you are not prepared for it, the costs can certainly add up quickly.

On average, this is what it could cost to own a dog in 2025 depending on the stage of life:

  • Puppy: $1,520 to $6,415 per year
  • Adult dog: $1,260 to $4,170 per year
  • Senior dog: $2,555 to $4,680 per year

Needless to say, the price of owning a dog can vary greatly depending on the situation. Puppies tend to have a higher cost when it comes to the veterinarian due to the number of visits needed to get all the proper shots and medical needs.

Other factors for cost can be attributed to the dog's breed, size, and medical needs, such as medication, or specialized food. Let me tell you, that specialized dog food can add up quickly especially if you have a dog that is prone to allergies. Ask me how I know.
