Colorado’s Highest Wind Gust Ever: 201 MPH on Longs Peak

It is not uncommon to see high winds during the fall months in Colorado. While I am writing this, Northern Colorado is under a high wind warning.

Risks and Hazards of Strong Winds in Colorado

High winds can cause various issues. Traffic issues can occur from trees and debris. Homes can be damaged due to trees. Power outages are common. Larger regions can be at risk for wildfires. I used to enjoy wind storms, but as I have become older I tend to be nervous aorund them.

Current Wind Conditions in Northern Colorado

At the time of writing, wind is peaking around 70 miles per hour. Believe it or not, these 70 mph winds are minimal compared to what the record in Colorado is.

Colorado’s Record-Breaking Wind Gusts

We did some digging and discovered what Colorado's wind record currently is. After some research, we found that the highest record wind gusts was on top of Longs Peak at Rocky Mountain National Park.

The 2021 Longs Peak Wind Record

The record happened in 2021. The highest wind was recorded at 201 miles per hour, according to Estes Park Trail Gazette. The highest wind ever recorded was in the United States was 231 miles per hour in New Hampshire.

Understanding the Impact of Extreme Winds

Any wind above 157 miles per hour would be considered a category five hurricane. This record was on top of a mountain, so no homes or major structures would be thought of, but neighboring cities would certainly notice the high winds and have damage to its homes as well.
