Colorado Day Trip: Visit the Charming Town of Palmer Lake
There are endless places to explore around the state of Colorado. From scenic forests with miles of trails to trendy college towns full of shops and breweries, many adventures are waiting to be had, no matter what you're into.
Obvious opportunities for fun exist in big cities like Denver and Fort Collins, but going off the beaten path leads to finding fabulous new experiences throughout the Centennial State. It's in some of the smallest towns where many of Colorado's hidden gems, including scenic hikes and phenomenal local businesses, are found.
If you're searching for someplace new to explore in Colorado, head to charming Palmer Lake for a day of small-town action.
Palmer Lake is one of three communities in the Tri-Lakes region between Denver and Colorado Springs. Founded by General William Jackson Palmer in 1871, the picturesque community along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains is rich in local history. Although the town has just over 2,500 residents, it's still bustling with plenty of entertaining things to see and do.
As its name suggests, the lake truly is the heart of the town. Palmer Lake Recreation Area is built around the beautiful body of water, making it a popular spot for fishing, hiking, biking, paddleboarding, and horseback riding under the blue Colorado sky. Kayaks and paddleboards are available to rent. There's also a challenging 18-hole disc golf course on the grounds. The area is part of the region’s Santa Fe trail system.
Downtown Palmer Lake is just steps from the lake. The quaint few blocks are lined with art galleries, boutiques, antique shops, and restaurants. To park in the downtown area, visitors are directed to utilize the no-fee public parking off Highway 105, near the pedestrian bridge.
Stop into Finders Keepers to shop for incredible locally handmade items, including jewelry, artwork, pottery, natural soaps, sauces, and seasonal products. Calvert's Mini Market has all the essentials needed for a picnic by the lake. The market is stocked with as many Colorado-made, produced, and grown products as possible.
