LOOK OUT: Mass Amount of Cats Being Stolen in Colorado
If you have ever had a pet go missing, you know how stressful and sad that situation can be.
I am a part of many Colorado Facebook groups and I hate seeing how many pets are lost daily in Fort Collins, Greeley, Loveland, Windsor, and beyond.
Thankfully, Northern Colorado comes together and many of these pets are found. Also, it's encouraging to see Coloradans post about when they find a pet that has been found.
Something Strange Is Happening
A Colorado resident named Kayla posted this in the Facebook group Fruita, Colorado message board.
If you live in sunset village, one of your neighbors is threatening to trap your cats to “protect the birds”. If you have a cat that is missing I would talk to your neighbors. I’m not sure what their plan is after trapping them, but I assume they don’t have good intentions.
Wait... What?
I'm not sure if I am living in a bubble, or what, but I was shocked about how casual this was posted. People are trapping their neighbor's cats.
I understand that sometimes your neighbor might have an animal that you find annoying, but this is extreme.
It's Not All About the Birds
Commenters mentioned that they have been running into this issue. One user pointed out that cats are being taken because they are using their neighbor's property as their own personal litterbox.
This month I had a neighbor steal my cats and take them to the shelter. They tried to do it twice. I had to call the sheriff and get them involved...
So, the sheriff informed my neighbor that Colorado is a free roam state for cats, it is up to the person (if they don't want cats in their yard) to fence them out. Also, it is actually a FELONY to take someone's cat with intent to deprive. - Megan Welton
Colorado Is a Free Roam State for Cats
It is pretty shocking what people are willing to do for a minor inconvenience. If you suspect the animal is missing, search for a collar and do the correct steps. Otherwise, you should probably mind your own business and not mess with people's pets.
If you are extremely concerned about cats wandering around your property, I would suggest placing eggshells around your yard. Cats hate scattered eggshells and they will stay away.
