Tonight Northern Colorado is going to be a huge choir singing along to all the hits of Rodney Atkins and Little Big Town brought to you by the Colorado Beef Council. The concert will be the first of four in our K99 Greeley Stampede concerts presented by Ehrlich Toyota in Greeley.

I have been a Rodney fan since the late 90’s. Back in 98 Rodney was a new artist signed to Curb Records in Nashville and his record rep brought Rodney here for a pizza party and to sing to us in our basement. He was such a nice, warm, real kind of guy that you were just drawn to immediately. He sings songs that he that mean something to him and it showed from the very beginning.

Rodney was born in Tennessee and was a put up for adoption right after birth. He was adopted by 2 different families who both returned him shortly after taking him because he was such a sick young boy. Finally a couple named Margaret and Allan Atkins of Cumberland Gap, Tennessee adopted Rodney and shaped him into the man he is today. Rodney attended Tennessee Tech college where he would play his guitar in local clubs and played baseball, which is his other love aside from country music. He told us in our interview with him that his son Elijah is a big Colorado Rockies fan. You can listen to that interview here:

Rodney was signed by Curb Records in 1997 but was unhappy with what would have been his debut album and asked the label for more time to make it the way he wanted it to sound. That project never did see the light of day but in 2003 he finally did release his debut album called “Honesty” which featured the title track which turned into his first hit single. Rodney then disappeared from the charts again for a few years until he came back in a HUGE way in 06 with his first of 5 number one hits in a row “If Your Going Through Hell”. That song not only topped the country charts but was named country song of the year by Billboard magazine and was certified platinum with over 1 million copies sold. That album also featured the number hits “Watching You”, “Cleaning This Gun” and “These Are My People” and helped Rodney win the ACM award for best New Male Vocalist in 06. He followed that with the album “It’s America” which featured the title track which turned out to be his 5th number one hit in a row and also had the smash hits “15 Minutes” and “Farmer’s Daughter”.

The video for “Watching You” is by far his most popular on YouTube and features his son Elijah, check it out here.

He has built up an impressive list of hits that are downloaded in bunches on iTunes too and you will hear them all when you join us Friday night. His top 10 most popular songs purchased on iTunes are…
