A high school girls basketball team in Nebraska is struggling to understand why officials would have upstaged the school's well-meaning charity game in which they wore pink uniforms to honor the Make-A-Wish Foundation by handing the team a technical foul.

The Omaha World Herald reported that the Burke High girls basketball team from Omaha NE  was assessed a technical foul at the start of the second half of the team's game against Omaha's Columbus High.

Oh sure, team get technical's all the time for game infractions of one kind or another but this was a team that was given a technical foul for supporting BREAST CANCER!

WHAT?

For wearing pink uniforms in a home game?  A girls game?  Shut the front door...

At the time, the Burke Bulldogs led the game by a point, but Columbus coach Dave Licari stooped to a new low in my book.  He told the officials that since Burke was the home team, they were required to wear white uniforms; which is true.  Home teams wear white.

But seriously, who in the world would complain about this?  Who!

In defense of the coach, perhaps, it was the Columbus AD {Athletic Director} John Krogstrand, who brought it to the coach's attention.

Naturally, the special pink uniforms being worn and auctioned off after the game to raise $2,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation that night didn't qualify as white, and the game officials — sticking to the strict interpretation of the rulebook — assessed a technical foul.

There are exceptions to every rule and this falls into that category.  Were the colors of the uniforms an advantage?  And WHY was this not brought up before the start of the 2nd half?

A Columbus player walked to the line, sunk two free throws to give her squad the lead and after a brief Burke run to start the second half, the Columbus Discoverers rolled on to a 62-47 victory.

As you can imagine, Columbus HS is now red faced and trying to make amends by doing the right thing. In my opinion they could start by hiring a new Athletic Director and maybe a coach although perhaps the coach was told by the AD to report the violation. And maybe they can write Burke a check for $2K!   Here is the statement by the Columbus High School principal.
