Mickey Guyton‘s ‘Better Than You Left Me’ is a breakup song about her ex. The newcomer sat down with Taste of Country Nights host Sam Alex recently to open up about the girl-power track and the man who inspired it.
“I like to say he suffered from bigger, better syndrome where he always thought the grass was greener on the other side,” Guyton admits. “One minute he wanted to be with me, and then he didn’t want to be with me, then he wanted to be with me, then he didn’t want to be with me …”
Of course, the man in question came running back to Guyton when she hit a milestone in her career. “Then I sang for the President of the United States, then he wanted to be with me and we were at this moment right here three years ago, and I was trying to let him know that I had moved on,” she shares. “He was not having it, and he says to me, ‘Don’t make me find someone else.'”
Being the strong woman that she is, Guyton told him that’s exactly what he should do — find someone else. She admits that that was the first time she really was brave enough to stand up for herself.
“The whole time I thought he was the prize, and then I realized that I was the prize,” the songstress reveals, explaining that that’s how ‘Better Than You Left Me’ was born. With the help of a few writers, she had her first single and a story to tell with it. “We wrote this song in about 30 minutes and it means the world to me.”
“Life is good,” Guyton adds. These days, she’s making new fans that she calls friends. The singer uses Twitter to stay in contact with them when she can, so if you talk to someone there, it’s really her.
Adds Guyton poignantly, “This has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl, and to see people responding it means a lot, so I want to reach out.”
Sam Alex is the host of Taste of Country Nights radio, a syndicated night show which airs on more than 60 Townsquare Media Group stations nationwide.
