The 1st J.C. Penney store ever was built in Kemmerer, Wyoming. Back in 1902 James Cash Penney opened his 1st store in Kemmerer, but back then the store was a "Golden Rule" store. By 1912, Penney had 34 stores in the Rocky Mountain States. In 1913, all stores were consolidated under the J.C. Penney name.

The so-called "Mother Store" still exists at the corner of Pine Street and J.C. Penney Drive. The J.C. Penney home is at the end of the street.  It was moved from its original location a few years back. It seems small by today's standards, but back then it was a nice sized home. The six-room cottage is now a National Historic Landmark. You may tour the home 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

We had a lovely lady named June Morris show us around the house.  She has lived in Kemmerer most of her life.  Her husband even helped refurbish the J.C. Penney Home.  My wife and I took a few photos during the tour.
