The Foothills Mall, in an era gone by, was the place to shop. With a struggling economy and new open air, 'town square' type shopping areas popping up in South Fort Collins and Loveland off I-25, the mall has struggled in recent years. For me, the shopping experience is just okay. If they have the items I want, then I don't care too much about the surrounding atmosphere. If I'm browsing with the potential to buy, I have to admit, it felt like I was shopping in the 1980's. The lack of items of interest keeps me from entering most of the stores.

That's probably why the complex is being redone by Greenwood Village-based Alberta Development Partners. They hosted an open house on Monday night, and according to the Coloradoan,

A preliminary site plan and hosts of photographs showed 375,000 square feet of retail including a modern but smaller enclosed mall surrounded by new shops, restaurants, cinema, courtyards, apartments and a parking garage.

Plans for exactly what will happen to the property will become clearer when they submit plans to the city of Fort Collins in late October. They plan to raze the outlying centers including The Shops, The Commons and the Plaza at Foothills.
