We have always had an "elephant in the room" at our house, in fact it was on the deck, okay it WAS the deck. My whole family has always known it was there and were very afraid of it but we didn't really talk about it. Ever since we moved into our home about 20 years ago or so, we have had a dilapidated deck. This thing was a danger to even look at. You could see rotting wood and twisted, loose stairways. It looked like a good stiff breeze or large bird dropping could take it down. We have always wanted to replace it and that day finally came.

My brother in law Ron is a very handy retired Marine and loves to tackle projects to keep him busy. He has always threatened to come and stay with us and build us a deck if I just kept him fed and gave him a place to sleep. I could not have made a better deal. Ron came to visit us a couple of weeks ago and the project is complete. Ron and my wife Kyla started with some boards and nails and a pencil and piece of paper and ended up building Deckzilla. I may never see my wife indoors again. She has always dreamed of having a nice place to hang out in the backyard and now has the private oasis she had imagined.

The two of them spent countless hours over the last week seeing their vision come to life and I am so proud and grateful for their handiness. I did the best thing I could do and that was help haul the lumber and then stay out of the way and watch the grandchildren. This is the kind of thing that can happen when your wife is addicted to the home improvement shows on television. I am so happy she learned how to use the remote and started watching them. You may have heard of the cartoon Handy Manny but at my house we have a Handy Granny. Well done Kyla and Ron.
