The other day I was wondering about all this snow we've had lately. Is this normal? Can I really recall 3 or 4 snow events by the first week of December? And what about the freezing temps for more than a couple of hours at a time this early in the season? Well lucky for my curiosity, I have a great friend that is "Mr. Climate", don't tell him I said that though, he is very modest.

Nolan Doesken is the Colorado State Climatologist and Senior Research Associate, Fort Collins Weather Station.

On a frigid day Nolan and I sit and talk about the weather. And he can be quite a card.

Once we got passed the fact that the weather IS always different we hunkered down to hit some hard facts about our seemingly snowy fall of 2011.

Nolan noted when he was talking about the snow patterns of the last three years that 2009/2010 was recorded as one of our top three snowiest winters in recorded history.

Our talk definitely showed me that one can easily forget from year to year. I learned that we have had quick blasts of snow two of the last three years. Nolan noted though that I was right in not remembering such a wet snow as we saw October 26, 2011.

Don't laugh too loudly if you already know the answer, but all this talk about wet and dry snows led me to ask Nolan what conditions caused one type of snow verses another.

And what weather talk with a climatologist would be complete without trying to get a prediction for the rest of the cold weather season.

Don't let Nolan's modesty fool you, he is quite the climatologist and has been dead on with his predictions more than he gives himself credit. Click here to learn more about Nolan Doesken.
