Snow season is here in Colorado and we have already had a few rounds of snow. Did you know that there are policies in place for snow removal at your home? I sure didn't and I feel silly for not being aware of them until now.

Proper snow removal is not only important for your safety but also for neighbors and other people in your neighborhood. I hate snow shoveling with a passion.

Yes, there are actual laws and policies regarding proper snow removal in Colorado.

According to Colorado Revised Statue 43-5-301 it is illegal to shovel or move snow onto public roads or property. This is a law across all of Colorado.

Interfering with public roads and highways can be a misdemeanor in Colorado.

There are separate laws for every county in Colorado, but nearly every county has a policy that if you are moving snow on your property, the snow has to stay on your property.

Clearing Snow Is a Responsibility for Colorado Residents

Colorado policies say that we have to stay on top of clearing sidewalks at our homes.

Many local laws require residents to clear sidewalks within 24 hours after a snowstorm to allow safe use by pedestrians. This is particularly important along school pedestrian routes to prevent children from having to walk in the street.

Making sure to have your sidewalk clear makes you a better neighbor. I think that is something we all know, but you could be fined if your property is not maintained for public safety.

Upon a third conviction therefor, the offender shall be punished by a fine of not less than ten dollars nor more than three hundred dollars or by imprisonment in the county jail for not more than three days and shall also be liable to any person, unit of government, or corporation in a civil action for any damages resulting therefrom.
