Necropsy results from the dead lynx that was a social media hit have determined the 11-year-old cat died of natural causes. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife he had cancer and a tumor in his throat that prevented him from eating. The lynx wandered across a ski slope in south-west Colorado after Christmas, stopping skiers in their tracks to snap pictures and video of the rare sight. He was found dead January 8, 2017.

“The cat lived a long life in the wild and spent its time in some of Colorado’s most incredible backcountry,” said Scott Wait, senior terrestrial biologist for CPW’s southwest region.

Lynx were reintroduced to Colorado in 1999 after they had all but disappeared in the 70s and are protected under the Endangered Species Act.
