It’s Friday and I love Friday. I love them for a lot of things but I love them especially so I can share and honor a local hero that is or has served our country. This week’s hero is from Fort Collins - Specialist (E4) Jonathon Colten Sanders.

SPC. Sanders moved to Fort Collins from Abilene Texas in 2006 at the age of 15 with his sister Stephanie and his mother. SPC. Sanders attended Rocky Mountain High School where he played football, baseball, wrote for the school paper and was on the year book staff.

SPC. Sanders graduated in May of 2010 and joined the U.S. Army that August.  He breezed through basic training followed by MP training and then trained as a paratrooper.

So far I've attempted to fly 12 times. Each and every time I've fallen. Some people would call it crazy, but what's really crazy would be jumping out of a plane without believing you can fly. Those are the crazy ones. I'm a paratrooper, and the parachute has always just been a back up plan. The mind in itself can make a heaven of hell and a hell of heaven - SPC Sanders, FB page

SPC. Sanders served in Afghanistan 8 Dec, 2011 to 4 Oct, 2012 at which time he returned to Alaska. SPC. Sanders is married to his High School sweetheart, Allie Daniels. Both now reside in Alaska.

SPC. Sanders was nominated by his Father who had this to say,

I am so proud of my son. He is MY hero. He always tries to do what is right, stands up for what he believes in. He has the biggest heart of anyone I have ever meet - Dave Sanders
