I was poor growing up. Not a lot poor, but medium poor. Does that make sense? Regardless, there were things I saw growing up that made me automatically assume you were rich.

Here's the list.

Trampolines

This was a big one. If I went to a friend's house and they had a trampoline, I just assumed their parents were doctors or lawyers. I will say my family eventually got one, but it had no safety netting, and we regularly flew off the side.

Soda

I grew up drinking water from the tap. We were definitely too poor for a water filtration system. Also, I'm pretty sure those didn't exist back in the 90s.

Nothing said peak wealth like a garage fridge stocked with different types of soda. I literally didn't know what Mountain Dew was until I went to a party at a friend's house in middle school. My pupils were fully dilated that entire night.

Hot Tub

My family had a hot tub growing up. It's called a bathtub, and I still own one. No big deal. Having a hot tub meant your parents were probably wealthy astronauts, because who could afford to have an outside tub of water? Not me.

Glamour Shots

Peak jealousy was when I went to a friend's house and saw those soft-lit mother-daughter portraits. Dressed in rhinestones and cowboy hats, with hair teased to Jesus, getting a full-on makeover and then having "professional" pictures taken was a whole lot of wow.

There was a Glamour Shots location in Fort Collins, but I only ever drove by. Womp Womp.

Vacations

Growing up, vacations weren't a thing. I didn't even take my first airplane ride until I was 19. Seeing friends fly away to Mexico on Christmas always blew my mind.

Vacation for my family meant renting a room at the Holiday Inn 15 minutes from our house. This only happened once a year, but damn, was it a treat, and we swam in the filthy, filthy pee pee water for 23 hours straight.

Colorado loves to act chill, until you see the price tags and attitudes in some of these towns. This list calls out the places where “laid-back” quietly turns into “we’re better than you.” We asked A.I. to give us what it thinks the snobbiest towns are. Don't @ us, this is the robots speaking.
