Vail Lays Off 1,924 Employees From 13 Colorado Ski Resorts
In another unfortunate sign of the wide-ranging impacts of the coronavirus, Vail Resorts Inc. has recently laid off and furloughed nearly 2,000 employees across a dozen Colorado resorts and ski areas.
According to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, the layoffs impacted the following resorts and hotels:
- Breckenridge Ski Resort, 105 employees
- Colorado Ski & Golf, 133
- Keystone Resort, 147
- Keystone Conference Center, 75
- Keystone Lodging, 200
- Vail Mountain, 204
- Beaver Creek Resort, 297
- Colorado Mountain Express, 198
- Bicycle Village, 65
- Vail Beaver Creek Resort Properties, 79
- Arrabelle at Vail Square, 82
- The Lodge at Vail, 89
- Vail Marriott Mountain Resort, 250.
According to Colorado Hometown Weekly, even the workers who were still kept on at the mountain resort company will still be feeling the impact of the virus on their income. Vail announced last week that it would be furloughing most hourly employees, cutting the pay for most salaried workers, reducing capital expenditures in general and suspending quarterly dividend payments entirely.
These cuts are largely due to the early resort closures that spread through the western section of Colorado in an attempt to hold off tourists who might bring the virus into the mountains, which has resulted in an an enormous loss of revenue for the industry.
