Some big changes to Colorado's world-famous Red Rocks Amphitheater went down since the last time I was there. Changes include all unisex bathrooms. Is that a cool change or weird?

Red Rocks Main Restrooms Now All Shared Gender-Neutral Facilities

I've not been to Red Rocks since 2019, maybe even longer honestly. It's probably crazy to admit that considering how iconic of a venue it is. People literally travel just to see shows here, or even just take a tour. They had some amazing upgrades happen since 2020 including a gorgeous new stage roof that really takes their concert production to a whole new level. One change that I didn't know about was the change to the main restrooms at the bottom entrance near the concession stand, and I wasn't the only one surprised.

Unisex Restrooms at Red Rocks Amphitheatre In Colorado

The main restrooms at the bottom entrance of Red rocks used to have a men's side and a women's side on both sides of the concession stands. They've now changed it to "Restrooms For Everyone" on both sides and it took me and a few others a second to make sure we were even in the correct line. Having unisex restrooms, especially in 2022 as we continue to change the way things have historically been done, isn't the worst idea. However, it does bring up some interesting questions, especially in a venue that hosts so many large sold-out events.

You stand in line with other ladies and guys to enter this main room. From there it's a next-person-up scenario like standing in line for a single-use restroom at a restaurant or gas station. The cool part is, that they're all separated from floor to ceiling with full-size doors and walls. The weird part is, that you never know who's on the other side of you. In the men's, or ladies' room, it's got some decent privacy among fellow ladies and gentlemen. Let's be honest, people are gross, and weird things happen in restrooms that you want to keep private, right? It could certainly be embarrassing to some to have people of the opposite sex potentially listening to what you're privately doing in the stall. Let's be honest, it's not always quiet.

The other thing is, do women really want to use a toilet that some drunk dude at a concert just whizzed all over? I'd guess no. Guys are gross, I can admit that. Most men's rooms at larger venues are disgusting... The dudes can barely aim sober.

The other issue I noticed was there's no way to know what stalls are in use, like the red & green signs on a port-o-potty, so you just have to turn handles until one opens up. The potential for folks to walk in on each other because they forgot to lock the door is pretty high, and with both men and women using these same stalls, that could be even more embarrassing.

Don't get me wrong, the facilities are very nice, they did it right for the most part, I just thought it was an interesting change for such a large venue with 10,000 plus people there for most events. One lady walked in and right back out after seeing men in there thinking she went to the wrong restroom and I'm sure she won't be the last. It'll be interesting to see people's reception to the change as concert season rolls on at Colorado's legendary Red Rocks.
