Nikki McGaffin spent several months recovering from December spinal surgery.

She healed just in time to return to the mound for Fossil Ridge SaberCats and lead them to a 2020 state title — helping the program get over the hump after runner-up finishes in 2014, 2017 and 2019.

McGaffin said being on the mound for last year's loss remained in the back of her mind all year. This season was different, as she was the winning pitcher in Fossil Ridge's 5-1 win over Cherokee Trail in the state title game on Saturday (Oct. 10) at Aurora Sports Park.

MaxPreps stats say she went 15-3 with a 2.00 ERA on the season. McGaffin also batted .383 with 10 RBI. While COVID-19 has altered Division I recruiting, she hopes to play collegiately someday.
