The State of Colorado decided to build U.S. 34 in 1931. Construction came in small sections over the next few years so traffic could still pass through the canyon.

The project on US Highway 34 through the Big Thompson Canyon is almost completed. Last May’s reopening of the canyon marked the end of all long-term closures.
The closure starting on October 2nd won't be the final time that construction impacts traffic in this area. Officials say that there will be additional work like work on access bridges and off-corridor work in the fall and winter of 2018.
