Today, National Coffee Day, I was thinking about my favorite Northern Colorado coffee shops, and I'm so lucky to live here because there are so many choices.

Maybe that's why, as of the end of September 2026, Starbucks has decided to close down more than 250 stores. While 250 seems like a big number. But to keep it in perspective, that's only  1% of Starbucks locations in the United States and Canada.

All the same, that's a good number of jobs people are losing. So what's happening right now at Starbucks, and how will it affect Northern Colorado?

Why are stores closing?

-Officials within the Starbucks company say the reason is simple. The stores that are shutting down either don't have a path to acceptable financial performance or have been unable to provide employees and customers with the standard of experience the company wants.

But how will this affect our coffee buzz in Northern Colorado? To cover ground, let's talk about the entire state of Colorado.

What about Colorado?

I have good news and bad news. The good news is that all Northern Colorado stores are currently safe. The bad news is the list isn't done growing, and more stores are to be announced.

Here are the Colorado stores closing so far

  • Colorado Springs- 4465 Centennial Blvd, as well as the store located at 7731 Central Rail Point
  • Denver- 10005 Grant Street. Unit F, as well as 9925 E. Hampton Ave
  • Grand Junction- 2601 Dos Rios Drive
  • Lafayette- 565 W. South Boulder Road
  • Wheat Ridge- 3820 Wadsworth Blvd.

Again, so far, Northern Colorado is safe from the shutdowns. But experts (my mom) say that the cuts have only just begun.
