‘SNL': John Goodman, Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone are the Three Wise Guys
It’s not every day that an actor of John Goodman’s caliber hosts ‘SNL,’ but whatever the odds, it’s not nearly as uncommon as him being joined by Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro for a holiday-themed sketch that sees the three silver screen icons re-imagined as tough-talking guys on the way to visit the baby Jesus. Yep, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas …
We can’t help but wonder how much of a last-minute process “The Three Wise Guys” really was. De NIro and Stallone are obviously on hand because “Grudge Match’ is almost in theaters and the whole sketch reeks of something that was thrown together at the last possible minute by a bunch of very tired writers. Sure, there’s definitely a solid concept in replacing the Biblical three wise men who visited Jesus Christ in the manger with a trio of Long Island crooks in windbreakers and tacky jewelry, but the execution isn’t really up to snuff. Aside from a handful of amusing moments (and the shock value of seeing these three together on the ‘SNL’ stage together), there are more cringes than laughs in this one.
We can complain as much as we want, but we also know that we’ll never be nearly as cool as one of these guys on their worst day. So why miss the chance to see them hang out and do lazy comedy together?
