This Iconic American Drink Was Invented in Colorado
Did you know that one of the most American things ever created was made right here, first in the state of Colorado?
I recently discovered this, and it blew my mind. I figured that this sweet and cold drink would have been created in a place like New York City or Chicago, but nope, it wasn't. Truthfully, I wouldn't have been too surprised if it was made in Denver, but this drink was not made there either.

From Cripple Creek to Ice Cream Fame: The Origin Story
In 1893, the drink was known by a different name, the Black Cow. One evening, the inventor, Frank J. Wisner, the owner of the Cripple Creek Brewing Company, looked out the window and saw the snow-capped peak of Cow Mountain in the distance.
This mountain gave him an idea, as it reminded him of ice cream sitting on top of something dark, like root beer. With this inspiration in mind, he went to the bar and filled a glass full of root beer, then topped it off with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Around the time of the invention of the root beer float, soda fountains were very popular in the United States. Needless to say, the concoction of vanilla ice cream and root beer took off like a rocket.
The Legacy Lives On in Cripple Creek, Colorado
To this day, Cripple Creek, Colorado, remains the official birthplace of the root beer float. These days, you can easily find a tasty root beer float at your local A&W. If you have never been to the one in Berthoud, I highly suggest you check it out. This drive-in will undoubtedly evoke a great sense of nostalgia.
