Northern Colorado Farm Has Crops Wiped Out By Hailstorm
Hail this year in Northern Colorado has been brutal. In May, a hailstorm came through Johnstown and totaled one of my vehicles and damaged my house. The storm that produced large hail seemingly came out of nowhere and caused major damage to property on May 28, 2024.
Another hailstorm in Northern Colorado occurred this weekend, causing even more damage, and wiping out an entire farm's crops in Loveland. On Instagram, Root Shoot Malting posted that the hail wiped out all of the farm's crops.

Root Shoot Malting said that the Sunday storm took out Olander Farms fields in Berthoud at an estimated 512 acres of crops. Those crops include 120 acres of non-gmo corn, 12 acres of blue corn, 300 acres of alfalfa, and 70 acres of Genie barley. Root Shoot said all of these crops that were tended to with five months of rigorous field work were completely destroyed by 30 minutes of hail.

Root Shoot Malting gave thanks to its farming crew in the post saying:
Olander Farms crew. Farming isn't for the faint of heart. Thanks for working your butts off this season. We'll get through it!
Root Shoot is also looking on the bright side of things after the devastating hailstorm. They are hoping that they can nurse the alfalfa back to health as it is a resilient plant. While the destruction of the crops may be unfortunate, Root Shoot Malting says that there was barely any runoff from the rain, which means that the farm's soil health practices are working.
