You may have seen Wes driving down College Avenue in Fort Collins recently. The military veteran sits in his wheelchair and holds signs that say "Black Lives Matter" and "Veterans Against Racism". Recently, his story was highlighted by our friends at Homeward Alliance, who asked the important question: why?

"We just buried a hero who put his life on the line and endured broken bones to change things. I should have done that," he told them, referring to recently deceased House Representative John Lewis, who was a huge part of the civil rights movement. Now, Wes is recognizing his privilege and using it for good.

The organization said that Wes is experiencing both support and—for the first time in his life—hate.

"When he was making copies of his signs at a local print shop yesterday, another customer (with a child in tow) came unglued upon seeing his sign and starting yelling profanities at him. The manager had to ask the man to leave. Wes said that's part of the learning experience for him." -Homeward Alliance
