A man from Loveland died over the weekend after sliding hundreds of feet on a snowfield and into rocks in Rocky Mountain National Park.

According to the Loveland Reporter-Herald, a 68-year-old man was skiing alone Sunday morning (June 13) in the area of Sundance Mountain in Rocky Mountain National Park, as bystanders witnessed the man slide uncontrollably about 400-500 feet. Witnesses on scene tried to render aid as they attempted to contact park officials.

Park rangers soon responded to reports of the unconscious man on Sundance Mountain on a north facing aspect midway between Trail Ridge Road and Old Fall River Road on Sunday; unfortunately, the Loveland skier died from his injuries.

The man’s body was reportedly flown by Northern Colorado Interagency Helitak to a helispot in the Upper Beaver Meadows area of the park at a later point on Sunday. His body was then transferred to the Larimer County Coroner / Medical Examiner’s Office.

As of Monday (June 14), the identity of the 68-year-old Loveland Man has yet to be disclosed.

As per an official press release from Rocky Mountain National Park, the man’s name will be released after next of kin are notified.

The 68-year-old skier was said to have been wearing a helmet at the time of the fatal incident.
