Sad news in the climbing world. For more than 20 years, Dr. Jim Detterline spent time as part of search and rescue on Longs Peak.

The Boulder County Coroner's Office said this morning that the 60-year-old climber was found Tuesday outside Allenspark (where he lived). The cause of death has not been released, but the sheriff's department has indicated he was wearing climbing gear and was lying between large rock formations.

Dr. Detterline assisted over 1,200 throughout those 20 years on Longs Peak. Dr. Detterline was awarded the Medal of Valor from the Department of the Interior for his years of service. He was hearing-impaired and an advocate for youth with hearing loss even taking them on hikes to the summit of Longs Peak.

Funeral arrangements will be on Tuesday, November 1st at the Assembly Hall of the YMCA of the Rockies. Times are still fluid, but the service is tentatively scheduled to be at noon and a viewing before the service and a reception following.
