Why do kids get sick mostly at night? Seriously, is there a reason? Because I feel like the stomach flu hits hardest or the fever spikes at night. As a parent, it's the worst feeling. It feels like you're alone in the world.

Just a few weeks ago, my 9-year-old went to bed feeling so so. A little nauseous, a little warm, nothing crazy. I went to bed hoping and praying sleep would do its thing, and the rest would give her body the time it needs to feel better.

I was wrong. It was a typical sick-kid night, which meant I slept with one eye open and checked to make sure she was breathing about every 4 minutes. It was a long night.

At around 2:00 in the morning, she was radiating heat. Panic mode set in. I went to the medicine box. I feel like every family has a medicine box, but there was no thermometer. Why in the hell are people touching things because they aren't where they belong?

After a feverish search, I woke my husband and told him he had to run to Walmart to get a new one. That's when he informed me that Walmart was no longer open 24 hours a day. When did this happen? Why did this happen? What were we going to do now?

So off to the ER we went. Luckily, they gave her nausea medicine, and she came out of the sickness fog. That little visit probably cost us more than a grand, ouch, but what choice did we have?

It got me thinking: What businesses in Northern Colorado are open 24 hours? Let's take a look so you don't end up feeling as helpless as we did.

Open 24 Hours

• The Waffle House, while this won't help you when the sickness hits your house, will come in useful for those late-night pancake cravings.
• Taco Bell is great after a night out drinking because when you're drinking, calories don't count.
• Anytime Fitness. But it's more likely you'll see me at Taco Bell
• 7-Eleven, okay, at least this place sells medicine. It's a limited selection, but it's something.
• Denny's, but my child needed a thermometer, not a Rooty Tootie Fresh and Fruity.

So I guess what I'm saying is that when it comes to medicine, you'll have to wait until the doors open in the morning. Womp womp.
