“Most Somber Since COVID”: Telluride Reels From Ongoing Ski Resort Closures
While many think of Telluride, Colorado, as a wealthy ski town home to music festivals and celebrities, the town itself is in the middle of a crisis that is affecting many of its less-wealthy residents.
What is Going on in Telluride, Colorado?
Like all of Colorado’s major ski towns, like Aspen, Vail, and Breckenridge, Telluride’s economy relies on tourism, which is centered around its ski mountain.

Unfortunately, the 2025-2026 ski season has been far from lucrative so far because of a dispute between ski patrol and the company that operates the Telluride Ski Resort, Vail Resorts.
Telluride, Colorado’s Ski Season Affected by Closures
The Telluride Ski Resort, affectionately referred to by many as Telski, submitted an offer to ski patrol in an effort to end the strike on December 6, 2025, but it was rejected. A counteroffer was submitted to Telski on December 21, but Vail Resorts returned with the original offer that was submitted earlier that month.
Then, on Christmas Eve of 2025, the ski patrol union voted to strike, a decision that closed the mountain on December 27. After numerous meetings but no resolutions, the ski mountain reopened with just one chairlift on January 5, 2026, only giving access to beginner terrain.
On January 6, 2026, a town council meeting was held at Telluride’s Rebekah Hall to address the dire economic situation in the town, with Mayor Teddy Errico giving the following grim message:
This is probably the most somber State of the Town address that anyone has given since Covid first hit.
The strike, which is now one of the longest in ski patrol history, has negatively affected small businesses and the overall workforce of the community the most.
Numerous fundraising efforts have been proposed, and some have been enacted, but Telluride is far from being out of the woods as tourism continues to be greatly down due to the continued closures of the ski mountain.
