When Did Colorado Become a State?
Colorado became a state on August 1, 1876. Hence the name the Centennial State, marking 100 years of the United States.
Before becoming a state, the territory was home to indigenous tribes, the Spanish, then followed by pioneers and gold prospectors.
Colorado's Population Throughout the Years
Before statehood, Colorado was home to around 34,000 people. During the 1880s the population boomed to over 100,000 citizens. Colorado continued to grow through the 1890s into the early 1900s reaching 1 million people by the 1930s.
Today, Colorado is home to over 5.7 million people, with the majority living on the Front Range. The largest city, and also the capital, in Colorado, is Denver, with a population of over 2.8 million people.
