Everyone loves State Route 128 in Utah in May, but add clear blue sky, sunshine, and temps near 60 in February, and it’s an instant cabin fever cure for Fruita/Grand Junction.

Utah’s State Route 128, known as the Upper Colorado River Scenic Byway, runs 44 miles from I-70 near Cisco, following the river to Moab. Canyon walls, ranch lands, hiking trails, and picnic stops overlook the river. Act fast, and for a limited time, you may have some of the overlooks and river crossings all to yourself before the spring campers show up.

February Weather: How It Makes the Drive Better

Winter trips to Moab can surprise ya. You might see some upper 50s and 60s this month. While it will still be chilly for those camping in the area, hikes, bike rides, and river photos should feel pretty great as long as the weather stays dry. It’s much more enjoyable now than when the temps are near 100, and the parking lots are full.

Beyond the Drive: Things to Do in Moab in February

In February, several campgrounds remain open along UT-128 near Moab, though many switch to first-come, first-served, and amenities like water may be limited. Key options include the BLM campgrounds along the scenic byway, such as Upper Onion Creek and Goose Island. If the mild temps hold, this could be a great month to explore the Corona Arch, Fisher Towers, or Dellenbaugh Tunnel. In Moab, National Parks like Arches and Canyonlands are also more accessible in February before the spring crowds arrive.
