Grand Junction Cliff Crash Kills 5 Teens: What We Know Now

Mesa County Valley School District 51 is headed back to school. It’s one of the busiest weeks for students all year, as they adjust to a new schedule, new classes, and responsibilities that come with beginning a new school year.

While "back to school" is usually an exciting time, it’s never easy when we notice someone is missing. This year, Grand Junction students return to school just days after 5 teenagers died suddenly in a crash on Orchard Mesa, three of them attended Grand Junction High School.

Residents near the Spyglass Ridge Community Center on Lookout Lane were notified of an accident that took place just before midnight on Saturday, August 8. Locals are checking their security cameras for any footage that may help authorities figure out what happened.

KJCT8 reports Grand Junction Police were dispatched to the 2000 block of Lookout Lane at 7:45 a.m. on August 9, after they were notified that a vehicle had driven off the road and down a steep hillside. The map above shows Lookout Lane at the top, the hillside, and the Gunnison River below. In the photo below, police make their way down to the vehicle.

All Five Victims Were 17-Year-Old Grand Junction Boys

On Monday, August 10, the Mesa County Coroner’s Office confirmed all five occupants were 17-year-old males from Grand Junction. As minors, their names will not be publicly released. Three of them, including those in the front seat, wore their seat belts. Two did not, and the coroner says both were ejected from the vehicle.

A Difficult Recovery and an Investigation That Continues

Police, firefighters, search-and-rescue personnel, and the coroner's office worked together to recover the victims from the steep hillside. Grand Junction Officials are still trying to determine why the vehicle left the road and if the driver was speeding. For a community where all five victims were local teenagers, the crash represents a devastating loss for Grand Junction.
