What Is Cinco De Mayo?

What does "Cinco De Mayo" mean, and why do we celebrate it? Well, besides Cinco De Mayo meaning the 5th of May, the reason for the celebration on this day is often confused.

While some believe it's to celebrate Mexican Independence Day, that day is actually recognized on September 16th. The 5th of May, or Cinco De Mayo, is to celebrate Mexico's victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla back in 1862.

While acknowledging that victorious day, it's also used as a day to celebrate Mexican-American culture, and that's where the fiestas and mass celebrations like in Downtown Fort Collins, Greeley, Downtown Denver, etc. come into play.
